Producer and director, Florence Ayisi. (2007)
Camera, Gavin Northover ; film editor, Catalin Brylla ; music, East Africa Melody.

In the Muslim country, Zanzibar, women's activities are severely curtailed. This is a portrait of a feisty group of women who have defied the cultural constraints by playing a man's game, soccer, giving reign to their competitive spirit, and defining new roles and identities for themselves in a predominantly Muslim society. Clerical disapproval has meant that there is a lack of women's teams with which to compete so the women must sometimes play against men's teams. A film by Florence Ayisi. 2008.

"Sisters In Law"
Cardiff-based Black and Minority Ethnic Women's Film Club will be screening Florence Ayisi's "Sisters In Law".
A film by Kim Longinotto, Co-directed by Florence Ayisi
Cameroon/UK, 2005, 104 minutes, Color, VHS/35mm/DVD, Pidgin English, Subtitled

Winner of the Prix Art et Essai at the Cannes Film Festival and screened to acclaim at more than 120 festivals around the world, SISTERS IN LAW is the bestselling documentary from internationally renowned director Kim Longinotto, co-directed by Florence Ayisi. In the little town of Kumba, Cameroon, there have been no convictions in spousal abuse cases for 17 years. But two women determined to change their community are making progress that could change their country. This fascinating, often hilarious doc follows the work of State Prosecutor Vera Ngassa and Court President Beatrice Ntuba as they help women fight often-difficult cases of abuse, despite pressures from family and their community to remain silent. Six-year-old Manka is covered in scars and has run away from an abusive aunt, Amina is seeking a divorce to put an end to brutal beatings by her husband, the pre-teen Sonita has daringly accused her neighbor of rape.

With fierce compassion, the two feisty and progressive-minded women dispense wisdom, wisecracks and justice in fair measure, handing down stiff sentences to those convicted. A cross between “Judge Judy” and “The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency,” SISTERS IN LAW has audiences cheering when justice is served.

TUESDAY 17 MARCH
Launch of the national Honour Based Violence Practitioner's Directory & Toolkit
Henna Foundation and Cardiff Council, in partnership with Cymdeithas Tai Hafan, Equality & Human Rights Commission, BAWSO, Safer Wales, South Wales Police and Cardiff Women's Safety Unit, will be hosting a one day conference to launch the Henna Foundation's Honour Based Violence Practitioner's Directory & Toolkit.

The conference will raise awareness of the risks and consequences of 'Honour' Based Violence (HBV) and Forced Marriage in families, building on and providing a new learning experience from the first conference of this theme last year. Recent developments in this area will be highlighted, such as the Forced Marriage (Civil Protection) Act 2007 and the Forced Marriage Unit's statutory practitioner's guidance. An emphasis will be placed on developing best practice in cross sector multi agency working in order to protect and support victims. Keynote speakers will include Nazir Afzal OBE, Director of Crown Prosecution Service London, and Anne Marie Hutchinson OBE, a Specialist Family Lawyer with extensive experience in this field, and will feature interactive panel discussions with leading experts. This free conference will give delegates the opportunity to listen, engage, question and exchange discussions with internationally recognised specialists in this field.

The event is aimed at public and voluntary sector service providers and community activists. It would be particularly valuable for those working in the areas of education, social care, health, community safety, equality and diversity, policy development, policing and law. RECLAIM THE NIGHT” ~ march to end violence against women!
A safe, empowering event to draw attention to women’s right to walk the streets at night without the fear or reality of violence, led by NUS Wales Women’s Committee.
A survey by a young women’s magazine in 2005 found that 95% of women don’t feel safe on the streets at night, and 65% don’t even feel safe during the day. 73% worry about being raped and almost half say they sometimes don’t want to go out because they fear for their own safety. Women cannot claim equal citizenship while the threat of violence restricts our lives as it does.
The march has 3 main focuses:
1. Challenge people’s attitudes towards women who fall victim to sexual violence.
2. Demand improved conviction rates for rapists.
3. Continue our campaign to get the Welsh Assembly Government to develop an integrated strategy to end violence against women
The front part of the march will be self-defined women only, and will be followed by a mixed march so that anyone, regardless of gender or gender identity, can show solidarity for the cause.
7pm

Route
Assemble at 7pm at the assembly point indicated on the map (from town, walk along Castle Street, over the bridge towards Canton, and we will be meeting on a triangular patch of grass between the bridge and the turn-off to Cathedral Road!).
We will march through town, up Castle Street, under the underpass by the Hilton and to the civic centre, ending up at the Welsh Assembly Government building in Cathays Park at approx 8pm, where we will have speakers including Paula Hardy (Chief Executive, Welsh Women’s Aid) and Naomi Brightmore (Director, WWNC), + more tbc.
